So I attended the IGDA Pittsburgh Chapters 2nd Annual Southside Studio Crawl, a sort of networking social event where a bunch of students and developers gather and mingle at the three game development/interactive entertainment/simulation studios in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh isn’t exactly big on game development studios compared to the west coast, but the ones that are here are big on mobile games. There were actually a lot of professionals there more than students, and I felt somewhat out of place saying I had a non-industry related job or was an “independent developer”, as my partner in crime and recently employed Schell employee would introduce me as. Regardless, it was an interesting event for me because this was the first time that I had been inside of an actual game dev studio office. I have to say that places like these have to be one of the best and most laid back environments to work at. No one cares about what you wear. No one cares if your cell phone is on. No one cares how many toys line your desk. Video game consoles are available for use at break time. These are the types of places that foster creative minds. These are the places for me.
